At the Helm

Thanks for your interest in submitting your fiction, non-fiction, and poetry to AtTheHelm. Here's how to do it. [NOTE: You can also download a copy of these instructions using the link below.]

1. Point your browser to the AtTheHelm website: http://www.atthehelm.org
   
2. Find the Submit to @theHelm! link in the menu on the left-hand side of the page. Click that link and note that three Submit links appear. Click on the proper link for your grade level.
   
3. The appropriate submission page will appear.
   
4. To make sure you are a human and not a spammer, we first have to ask you a simple math problem. Please answer the Math Question by typing the correct answer to the problem in the field below it.
   
5. In the Author's Name field, enter the student's first and last names. Please note that only the student's first name and last initial will appear on the website.
   
6. In the Email Address field, enter an email address that we can use if we have any questions about the piece being submitted. We will not publish this email address on the website.
   
7. In the Grade field, please click the bubble for the student's grade.
   
8. In the Title of poem or story field, please enter the title for the piece.
   
9. In the Genre field, please select the appropriate bubble.
   
10. Simply copy and paste the story or poem in the large field that follows. [Please ignore the Split summary at cursor button to the right.] If you need to do any special formatting--such as italics or bolds--please contact us via email at editor@atthehelm.org and let us know what you need.
    

In some cases, the story or poem being submitted may be too long to simply paste into the field described above. If that's the case, please leave the field empty and, instead, use the following process to attach your piece:

1. Click the File attachments link
   
2. A file browser will appear. Click the Browse... button and locate the file you wish to attach. Click on that file to place it in the field.
   
3. Click the Attach button and wait a few seconds for the website to attach it to your submssion information. Please note that if you do not click the Attach button, your piece will not be attached to the submission!
   
4. Once your file has been attached, you will see it listed in the window.
   

Once you have entered all of the required information, click the Save button. After a few seconds, you will be returned to a screen that notes the grade level of your submission and confirms that it has been created. You will also see a message stating that You are not authorized to access this page. Don't worry about that--all that means is that you cannot see the finished product online until our editors have had a chance to review it!
